Wow...! An impressive piece of artistry from the mid-1800s, in its gorgeous original fitted velvet case, this good-sized locket features a decorative 'door' to the front which can be opened using a little catch to the left, to reveal a photo locket compartment which currently contains a beautiful piece of Victorian sentimental hair work with pearl detail (this can be removed and replaced if desired).

Tests as solid gold of approx 12 - 14K to the main section and 14K to the leaf decoration elements.

The sculptural 'front door' is formed of textured, glittery rose and yellow gold leaves and flower with a silver and gold parrot perched on top, all set with little seed pearls, turquoises, and a ruby eye. So detailed!

The locket itself is surrounded by a beautiful ornate scrolled border, with original bail loop to the top and three little dangling torpedo drops to the bottom. To the rear is the hinged glass door used to load photos or a memento into one/both frames, and an original pin fitting to enable wear as a brooch.

Unusually, this wonderful piece comes complete with its original Victorian velvet and silk lined case which is perfectly fitted to accommodate the contours of the locket. The catch is in great condition and still holds the case shut with a secure click. The interior velvet is in wonderful condition and the exterior is a bit worn but still OK.

This is certainly an eye-catching piece and a super collector's item!

MEASUREMENTS: Approx 3" total drop from the top of the bail to the bottom of the droppers, 2" from the top flourish of the main part to the bottom one. Locket window 1 7/16" high to the front. 28.8g in weight.

CONDITION: In really lovely antique condition, with no damage or losses to the design. On close insepction there is one tiny manufacturing imperfection to the top of the leftmost leaf. The inside 'cross' on the door to which the front elements are attached may be gilt metal for strength, and the settings of the turquoises/pearls below the bird look more silvery than gold. The drops have little soft solder seams where the bottoms have been joined on which are faintly visible, mentioned for complete accuracy. Overall, wonderful for its age. Please view all close-up photos. Any display chains/boxes are shown for photography purposes only.
